Sharon Local History Collection

Currently, usage of the reading room and historical materials is by appointment only. We are currently unable to accommodate walk-ins. Please reach out to our Archivist at: anathanson@sharon.ocln.org. Be sure to include information about what you are interested in viewing.

The Library maintains a collection of print materials related to the history of the Town of Sharon, including the following:

  • Books and documents relating to the history of Sharon (or Stoughtonham, as it was originally named).
  • Images and postcards of Sharon views, sites, buildings, and residents.
  • Maps and atlases of the area.
  • Personal manuscripts and other materials that record the history, experiences, and ancestry of Sharon individuals and families.
  • The Deborah Sampson Collection (the first known woman to impersonate a man in the U.S. Army when she served as a soldier during the American Revolution).
  • Sharon Annual Reports, Town Meeting Warrants, and Street Lists.
  • Vital Statistics: births, deaths, wills, and epitaphs.
  • Sharon High School yearbooks (Marsengolds).
  • Records that chronicle the history of Sharon organizations and institutions.
  • Materials that record the social and cultural heritage of past and present ethnic, immigrant, and religious groups in the community.

Viewing a finding aid can be helpful in judging if our collection will be of interest to you. A finding aid lists all the materials an archive has to offer, as well as providing some historical context. The full finding aid can be accessed by reaching out to the Archivist.

All patrons must fill out our Archival Registration Form and then sign our logbook upon arrival. The registration form is valid for one year, and needs to be completed only once. The logbook should be signed at the start of each visit to the archive.

A significant portion of the collection has been digitized and can be found in Digitized Sharon History.
